StitchPencil

StitchPencil stick: firmware

Firmware 1.0.11 · 22 October 2026

The StitchPencil stick lives in the USB port of your embroidery machine. StitchPencil sends your designs to it over Bluetooth, and your machine simply sees a USB stick with the design on it. Inside, it's a small Waveshare board — two of them are supported, see below.

Now and then there is new firmware for the stick. Your iPad can't install it, but a computer can — and it only takes a couple of minutes.

Supported sticks

The firmware is one and the same for both; it tells at start-up which board it is on. Both have a display, a microSD slot and a USB-A plug, and both do exactly the same things.

Recommended

Waveshare ESP32-S3-GEEK

Comes in a case, with a 1.14" display. The stick in the pictures and videos here. Our recommendation: nothing to build, nothing to protect.

Plain links, no affiliate. Waveshare is the maker and ships from China — allow a few weeks; Amazon is quicker. Search for “ESP32-S3-GEEK”, the name is what matters.

Also supported

Waveshare ESP32-S3-LCD-1.47

A bare board with a larger 1.47" display and an RGB light that shows what the stick is doing: blue while pairing, green when connected, amber while a design arrives, red when something went wrong. No case — handle it as the circuit board it is. It has two buttons: BOOT is the one the stick uses, RESET restarts it.

A plain link, no affiliate — Berrybase is simply where we bought ours.

Other boards may follow. Firmware 1.0.11 or newer runs on both; a stick on 1.0.10 is a GEEK.

What you need

A microSD card can stay in the stick. Installing doesn't touch it.

Here's how

  1. Hold down the button on the stick while you plug it into the computer, then let go. The display stays dark — that's right, the stick is now waiting for its firmware.
  2. Click Update stick below. Setting up a brand-new stick? Take Full image instead.
  3. Your browser asks which device to use. Pick the stick — it's called “USB JTAG/serial debug unit” or something similar — and click Connect.
  4. Click Install StitchPencil Stick, then Install. After about a minute it's done.
  5. Unplug the stick and put it back into your machine. You'll find the firmware version in StitchPencil under the stick button in the gallery.

The installer

Install right here, from your browser

No download, no program to set up: plug the stick in, click the button, and your browser writes the firmware onto the stick.

This browser can't install firmware. It doesn't work on phones or tablets, not even in Chrome. Open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Installing only works on the secure address of this page (https).
  • Update is the one you'll usually want. Your pairings, the display language and the designs on the stick all stay.
  • Full image is for a new stick, or if an update didn't work. Your designs stay, but the stick forgets which iPads it knows.

Nothing gets erased beforehand, and nothing leaves your computer: the installer and the firmware both come from this page.

Used the full image? Then the stick won't recognise your iPad any more. On the iPad, go to Settings › Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ next to the stick and choose “Forget This Device”. After that, simply pair again in StitchPencil.

Prefer Espressif's own installer?

No problem. Download the firmware here and install it with Espressif's web flasher. It asks for an address: the update goes to 0x20000, the full image to 0x0.

Three ways onto the stick

From the iPad

Pairing and sending

In StitchPencil, open Export, pick a machine format and tap Send to StitchPencil stick via Bluetooth. The very first time, the stick shows a six-digit code — type it into your iPad and you're paired. From then on, your iPad finds its stick on its own. The stick button in the gallery shows what's on the stick and lets you delete designs you no longer need.

From the browser

Send from the browser

Files you already have — purchased designs, files from other software — go to the stick straight from a web page: drop them in, done. No installation, nothing leaves the page.

Chrome or Edge on a computer, or Chrome on Android, with Bluetooth 4.2 or newer. Safari and Firefox cannot do Bluetooth in the browser.

From the Mac

StitchPencil Stick for Mac

Files you already have — from your own folders or from other software — can go to the stick from a Mac too. Drop them on the window and they are on the stick; delete what you no longer need. No previews, no conversions: designs are made in StitchPencil on the iPad.

Needs macOS 14 or newer and Bluetooth 4.2 or newer — older Macs and Bluetooth 4.0 dongles cannot pair with the stick. The first time, the stick shows a six-digit code and macOS asks for it. The Mac and the iPad take turns: while the Mac window is open, the stick is the Mac's.
